Sgeulai Pro
Sgeulai is free to download and free to keep using. Sgeulai Pro is one purchase, once, that unlocks the rest of it. There is no subscription and no trial period to run out: the free side of the app doesn't expire, doesn't count your words, and doesn't stop letting you write.
Open it from the Sgeulai menu ▸ Sgeulai Pro…. It also opens by itself when you choose something that is part of Pro, with a line at the top naming what you chose — Draft Here is part of Sgeulai Pro.
What stays free
All of the writing, and all of the Story Bible:
- The editor, and as many projects as you like, with no limit on words. A free project holds one manuscript; a series sharing one Story Bible is part of Pro.
- The whole Story Bible — characters, locations, events, relationships, dates and your own categories — with no limit on how many records you keep.
- Every import: Scrivener, DOCX, EPUB, Aeon, Markdown, Apple Books highlights.
- Exporting your manuscript as DOCX, RTF or Markdown, and your whole project as a JSON backup. Your words come out of this app whatever you have paid.
- Eleven analysis tools: Corkboard, Plot Board, Timeline, the Relationship Graph, Scene Grid, Structure, History, the Name Registry, Writing Goals, Writing History and AI Readings.
- Check This Scene, which checks the scene you are in against your Story Bible, as often as you like — see below.
- Wikipedia and Wikidata lookups, Research Highlights, the Link Integrity report, Statistics, and the style check with its word lists.
What Pro adds
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Continuity Check, on the whole book | Twenty rules read the entire manuscript against your Story Bible, and mark the findings as you write. Checking one scene stays free. |
| Canon Fixes | Change an attribute in the Story Bible and carry it into every passage that still says the old thing — one sentence at a time, ticked by you, and never swept. |
| Ask Your Book | Answers a question about your book from the Story Bible and the manuscript, and quotes the passage it read, with a link that lands on it. An answer it can't trace to your own words isn't shown. |
| Draft Here and Rewrite Selection | Drafts a passage at the cursor, or rewrites the one you selected, from your Story Bible — checked against the book before you see it. See Reading the manuscript with AI. |
| Previously in the series | Writes what happened in the earlier books as of the moment this one opens, holding back anything your reader hasn't reached yet. Your own summaries, no AI. |
| Submission Pack | Writes the pitch, synopsis and series bible an agent asks for, then runs each one through the continuity rules before you read it. A synopsis that invents a character doesn't reach you. |
| The tools that judge the book | Family Tree, Cast Grid, Loose Ends, Spine Report, Five C's, Voice Check, Scene Shape, Thread Map, Pacing, Paragraph Profile, Readability Comparison, Vocabulary Index, Style Report, Series Continuity and Character Arc. |
| Everything an agent asks for | Export for Vellum, styled ePub, PDF, tracked changes, Scrivener, Plottr, spoiler-safe canon, the Story Bible reference, and the AI provenance and disclosure reports. |
| Apply Pseudonyms | Swaps real names for manuscript names across the prose. Restoring the real names is always free, whatever you own — undoing something the app did to your words is never something you have to buy. |
| Analysis with Claude | The deeper passes that read your manuscript with Claude. See below about what those cost. |
Check This Scene, which is free
Tools ▸ Check This Scene checks the scene you are working on against your Story Bible — an appearance the Bible contradicts, a real name left behind a manuscript name, a link to the wrong kind of record, an age the scene's date won't allow. It is free, unlimited, and uses the same rules on that scene that Pro uses on the whole book, so it does not give you a second opinion: it gives you the same one, about less of the book.
Choosing Continuity Check in the binder without Pro runs that same check and shows you what it found, with the case for the whole-book version underneath. What one scene can't show you is the rest: a setup you never paid off, a character still alive two chapters after they die, a journey the dates don't allow.
Locks in the binder
A tool that is part of Pro carries a small lock beside it in the binder, so you can see what is included before you choose it rather than after. Continuity Check has no lock, because that row does something free.
What Pro does and doesn't pay for
The features that read your manuscript with Claude need your own Claude API key, or Apple's on-device model where that is available. Pro doesn't pay for those runs — Anthropic bills your key directly. The app shows an estimated price before it sends anything, and stops at a spending limit you set. Continuity Check, Check This Scene, Canon Fixes and Previously in the series use no AI at all and cost nothing to run.
Whether you already have it
The window says so: Sgeulai Pro is unlocked for this Apple Account. It is a one-off purchase on your Apple Account, and it is shared through Family Sharing like any other.
Buying it
The button carries the price: Buy Sgeulai Pro — and whatever your App Store charges in your own currency. Clicking it hands over to the App Store, which asks for whatever it usually asks you for, and the window changes to the unlocked line when it's done.
Restore Purchases, beside it, is for a Mac that hasn't caught up — a fresh install, a new machine, a different account signed in while you bought it. It asks the App Store again and costs nothing.
If the window says Sgeulai Pro isn't available from the App Store right now, the app couldn't reach the store. Try Again asks once more. Nothing has gone wrong with what you own, everything you have written is unaffected, and the free tools keep working.
What you own
Sgeulai Pro is a one-time payment, not a subscription. Nothing stops working because you stopped paying, because there is nothing to keep paying.
- The version you buy is the version you own. Pro licenses the major version it was bought for, and that license doesn't expire.
- Every update within that version is free — features, fixes and improvements alike.
- A new major version is optional, and discounted for you. If one arrives, it is a separate one-time purchase offered to existing Pro owners at a reduced price. You never have to take it: if you don't, you keep exactly what you bought.
- Your work is yours either way. Whatever you have paid, your manuscript exports as DOCX, RTF or Markdown and your whole project as a JSON backup — and anything the app did to your prose can be undone without buying anything.
On the iPad
It's one purchase for both: buy it on either, and the other unlocks when it next checks with the App Store. You are never asked to pay twice for moving between them.
Three Pro features are on the Mac for now — Draft Here, Rewrite Selection and Continuity as you type — and the iPad's own Pro sheet says so beside each of them. They follow in a later release, free to anyone who already has Pro.
The iPad has no menu bar to open the sheet from: reach it from Settings ▸ Sgeulai Pro, or by choosing something that is part of Pro. That is also how you reach Restore Purchases there.
