Terms of service

Last updated:

This is a working draft written in plain language. It hasn't had a lawyer's review, and it should get one before Sgeulai is sold or distributed at any real scale. Until then, treat it as a good-faith statement of intent, not a finished legal document.

Agreement

These terms cover your use of sgeulai.com — the website, the download, the email signup, and anything else hosted here. By using the site, you're agreeing to them. If you don't agree, the only ask is that you not use the site.

Email updates

Signing up gives us permission to email you about Sgeulai's releases and occasional updates. You can leave the list at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email we send, no explanation needed. See the privacy policy for what we collect and why.

Using this website

Use it for its intended purpose — learning about Sgeulai, reading the documentation, downloading the app, signing up for email updates. Don't try to disrupt it, scrape it abusively, or use it to distribute anything unlawful or harmful.

Content and intellectual property

The Sgeulai name, mark, and the design of this site are ours. The help documentation may be read, linked to, and quoted with attribution, but not republished wholesale as your own. Screenshots and product images on this site depict the application and are provided for informational purposes.

The Sgeulai application

This page mostly covers the website. Sgeulai itself runs on Mac and iPad and is sold through Apple's App Store. Apps bought there are licensed under Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement unless the developer provides its own; until we publish a dedicated license, Apple's applies, alongside the commitments on this page. Any build downloaded directly from this site is covered by this same good-faith statement of intent.

What's already true, and described in full on our AI page: manuscripts and Story Bible data are stored on your own devices, or in your own iCloud Drive if you keep a project there, not on our servers; optional AI features use your own API key and are subject to Anthropic's own terms for that service, separate from ours.

Purchases, updates, and upgrades

  • The app is free. Sgeulai is free to download and free to keep using. The free version is not a trial: it does not expire, does not limit how much you write or how many records you keep, and does not stop working.
  • A 14-day free trial of Pro. Before you buy, a free trial unlocks everything Sgeulai Pro does, on your own book, for fourteen days from the moment you start it. It is a free item on your Apple Account, so it can be started once, and nothing is charged when it ends. When it ends the Pro tools lock again; everything you made with them stays.
  • One purchase, both devices. Sgeulai Pro is a single in-app purchase that unlocks the rest of the app on both Mac and iPad through Apple's Universal Purchase, for use under the Apple Account that bought it and by members of that account's Family Sharing group.
  • A lifetime license. Your Pro purchase is a one-time payment, not a subscription. It gives you a lifetime license to the major version you bought — you can keep using that version for as long as you want, with no further payment.
  • Free updates within your version. Every update within that major version is free. Buy Pro for Sgeulai 2, for example, and every 2.x release is included.
  • Paid upgrades, at a discount. A new major version is offered as an optional one-time in-app purchase, at a discounted price for existing Pro owners. Upgrading is never required to keep using the version you already own.
  • Your work is yours either way. Whatever you have paid, your manuscript exports as DOCX or Markdown and your whole project as a JSON backup (and as PDF or ePub, marked as made with the free version), and anything the app did to your prose can be undone without buying anything.
  • What "lifetime" covers. The license to your version never expires. It isn't a promise that new major versions will be released on any particular schedule, or that an older version will keep working on every future release of macOS or iPadOS — Apple's operating systems change, and older software can eventually stop being compatible with them.
  • Payments and refunds. Apple processes every purchase, and we never see your payment details. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com and are handled under Apple's policies.
